Since , Red Bull has been holding an annual breakdancing competition called Red Bull BC One Camp to honor and celebrate one of the historical — and currently, often overlooked — tenets of hip-hop. Founded in Switzerland, the competition has actually never been held in the US until this year, when the city of Houston, Texas was tapped to host it this past April. As I watched Les Twins, aka Laurent and Larry Bourgeois, teach a velvety routine to their troupe of dancers, another teacher — colloquially dubbed Crazy Legs, as a hip-hop pioneer who leads the prominent Rock Steady Crew — walked up to me and offered some kettle corn. At first I say no, but eventually gave in, because… kettle corn. After day one was almost over, the venue seemed to get smaller and smaller as more people began to show up; everyone itching to see the all-B-girl Cypher began to crowd around the dancefloor in anticipation.

Better known as the Naked Brothers Band, the brothers, ages 13 and 10, have become a sensation with the tween set thanks to their eponymous show on Nickelodeon and huge online following. The Wolffs arrived at the packed Berklee Performance Center in the homestretch of their first tour and delivered a minute set that started at energetic, moved to frenetic halfway through, and hit Pixy-Stix-mixed-with-Red-Bull levels by the time Nat did his final leap from the drum riser. Frontman Nat, who writes most of the band's songs, is a blur of kinetic energy on stage, gangly and pleasantly unpolished.

A few years ago, I was walking with a friend in some fields on the southwest coast of Rousay, one of the northern isles of Orkney. There were a fair amount of cattle about, but we weren't paying much attention to them and nor were they to us. True, one beast did look significantly bigger than the others, and I said to my friend, "Oh, d'you think that might be a bull? My friend — whose guiding spiritual principle derives from a koan given to him by a sadhu he found sitting cross-legged at the source of the Ganges when he was a young man — cannot bear witness to a physical challenge without immediately responding to it: if he notes that a cliff might be tricky to scale, he scales it; if he supposes that a current might be treacherous to navigate, he strips and breasts it.
